About the Performers
Ensemble Epomeo, Caroline Chin- violin, David Yang- viola and Kenneth Woods-cello, is an internationally touring and recording string trio, whose performances combine intensity, virtuosity and accessibility. Founded in 2008, Ensemble Epomeo's inaugural tours saw them performing in Italy, the UK and the USA, with performances at the Newburyport and Ischia festivals, and broadcasts on New England Public Radio and WKCR Columbia University in New York, where they were the subject of a 3 hour special showcase concert. The trio has developed vibrant collaborations with two leading music festivals- the Newburyport Chamber Music Festival in Massachusetts, where their annual performances have become regular sellouts, and the Two Rivers Festival in Birkenhead, England, where they have appeared more often than any ensemble, sharing the festival spotlight with artists including the Tallis Scholars, Emma Kirkby, Craig Ogden, Noriko Ogawa and Piers Lane. In May 2013, Ensemble Epomeo will be appearing as resident ensemble at the Scotia Festival of Music in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a post previously held by Pierre Boulez's Ensemble Intercontemporain and the renowned baroque ensemble. Tafelmusik.
In December 2011, Ensemble Epomeo made their first commercial recording for Avie Records, a disc featuring the complete string trios of Hans Gál and Hans Krása, which will be released in July 2012. The disc includes the world premiere recording of Gál's two string trios, written in 1931 and 1972, and given their American premieres by Ensemble Epomeo in 2010 and 2011 respectively. As passionate advocates for the music of our time, Ensemble Epomeo are active in commissioning new works to expand the string trio literature, and are also active in rediscovering overlooked works for trio, both new and old. The trio recently made their first Canadian tour, with a residency at St Thomas University and a highly praised debut at the Scotia Festival of Music/Music Room concert series in Halifax The members of Ensemble Epomeo have all held prestigious professional teaching and performing positions and been recipients of a wide variety of fellowships and awards. The trio take their name from the legendary volcano Mount Epomeo on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples, where they gave their debut performance in 2008 at the Festivale di Musica da Camera d'Ischia in Italy, performing Schnittke's String Trio, a work they have since become closely identified with.
