The Tenri Chamber Players are thrilled to announce a new chamber series, “Music and the Spoken Word” at the Tenri Cultural Institute, NYC!

About this event

The Tenri Chamber Players (TCP-NYC) is a new chamber music ensemble performing at the Tenri Cultural Institute of New York City. Founded by distinguished performers, faculty, and graduates from the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes Conservatory and the Juilliard School, it is a testament to the power of collaboration between artists of varied generations, genres, and backgrounds through the transformative powers of music. Rising from the ashes of COVID-19 the Tenri Chamber Players unique series will present “Music and the Spoken Word” with well known speakers. The series is held in a less formal atmosphere in the midst of the Union Square and Greenwich Village neighborhoods, an area underserved by classical music concerts.

STATEMENT of PURPOSE

I'm at a loss as to how to say a few things about preparation of these concerts. But I will try to explain our purposes.

I was visiting my daughter's home in the country during Covid isolation to avoid infection. There was a sense of dislocation for me during isolation and a sense that this was a chance to better understand my family and personal life not to be missed. I practiced every day, albeit on an electronic piano. My wife continued to teach piano remotely, which she disliked.

In my daily practice and study, I found that Chopin came to mind. He had also been displaced from his native Poland. Some of this quality of displacement can be found in a sense of yearning and inner searching in the romanticism of his music. For me during separation simply listening to music was sustaining.
Now that we can once again gather, it seems right to dedicate our performance to the bravery of the capitol police, who suffered as a result of this past Jan 6th’s insurrection. They are heroes; not the first time Americans have responded heroically to dangers.
It is gratifying to be able to perform again! Thoughts and prayers are sent out to all who acted well during this stressful time, especially the heroes among us. We salute and commemorate those who serve and defend us.
